Pine (Pinus)

Traditional Knowledge and Botany

  • Pine trees belong to the Pinaceae family. Numerous species are known, including evergreen and light-demanding types. In our region, the most widespread species are Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) and Aleppo pine (Pinus halepensis).
  • Pine trees can reach heights of up to 30 meters and are widely distributed as forest-forming species.

Characteristics

  • Pine is an evergreen tree, which allows it to purify the air not only during summer but also in winter.
  • Pine needles have a large cumulative surface area that effectively captures dust and airborne pollutants, making pine a highly efficient species for reducing air pollution.
  • Pine trees are highly resistant to strong winds and harsh weather conditions, which makes them especially important in mountainous areas for air purification and pollution reduction.

Uses

  • Pine wood is widely used for the production of construction materials, timber, furniture, and formwork.
  • In beekeeping, pine flowers are also utilized as a nectar source for honey production.

Suitability for Yerevan and Armenia

  • Pine is widely distributed in the mountainous regions of Armenia and serves important functions in air purification and in controlling heavy rainfall and wind impacts.
  • In Yerevan and other cities, pine is highly valuable for urban greening due to its evergreen nature, shade provision, and strong air-cleaning capacity.
